Highlights
Students really enjoyed Pajama Day yesterday. The three classes came together for stories in each of the different Grade 1/2 classrooms displaying a real sense of BELONGING.  
Students have been really engaged in our study of the Blackfoot people. We found it interesting that women were in charge of making tipis and that they rubbed animal brains into the bison hides to protect the tipi from the elements.
Our focus in math this week was subitizing. We will move this concept into building mental math strategies for addition.
A sticker was sent home with the oldest child attending our school regarding the Winter Celebration.  Please look for it in your child’s agenda and fill it out accordingly.

January Report Cards We certainly hope that report card celebrations are going on this weekend.  Students have worked very hard and should be proud of the work they have done. Science We are exploring the concepts of “Hot and Cold” during our science learning time. Reading a thermometer and comparing temperatures has been part of our learning goals this past week. We will be moving into inquiry experiences where the students will learn how and when temperatures change.  Social Studies We are looking how Calgary has changed over time. We are hearing stories and learning about how missionaries and the N.W.M.P. began to build the city we now know  Mathletics We are practicing addition strategies and learning the place value of numbers. Note Regarding Tasty Tuesday Lunch on February 11, 2020: Due to our field trip on February 11, students will be missing the Tasty Tuesday hot lunch.  I’m sending my utmost apologies as I realized too late for a bagged lunch to be provided for those students.  Would you please send a lunch with your child for the field trip, and we will reheat the Tasty Tuesday lunch and serve it to students on Wednesday, February 12.  Thank you so much for your understanding. Valentine Exchange: We will be exchanging valentines with each other on Wednesday, February 12.  A class list was sent home with each student today. It would be really nice if students personally addressed each card (This would also be great copying practice for students who struggle with this skill). February 12, 2020 Heritage Park Field Trip: Our field trip to Heritage Park yesterday was absolutely amazing!  We had the opportunity to explore the homes of the Prince and Thorpe families, who greatly influenced the development of Calgary. We saw hidden staircases, interesting artifacts that we guessed the uses of, and played with toys children had in the past.  We began our time in the one room schoolhouse by riding our ponies to the stable in the school yard. In the schoolhouse we tried cursive writing, learned about Roman numerals and learned about how teachers in the past checked students for sickness before school started.  We’ve often talked about how we would love to travel back in time, and our day at Heritage Park allowed us to do just that. Thank you so very much to all the volunteers who generously shared their day with us, making this great field trip possible.
