In math, we continue to practice adding. We have been applying the strategies to larger numbers, as well as in problem solving. We have been showing the value of numbers using base ten blocks to familiarize students with counting larger numbers and regrouping larger numbers when adding. Our most recent focus is solving word problems and deciding which strategies we can use to solve them most efficiently. We will be focusing on subtraction in the next coming weeks. 
Students have been writing stories and are excited to share them with you at student led conferences. 
We look forward to celebrating your child’s learning with you at our up-coming Student-Led Conferences. Please ensure you set aside time to come in and have your child share their learning with you. Details of how to sign up will be on our school website. Just a reminder, this is a student led conference so we will need your child to attend with you. 
Students have enjoyed working with our visual artist, Marcia.  They have learned about creating light, medium and dark applications of paint, and how to layer paint to get the effect they want.

Room 2 students will be divided in half. Half of the students will join Mrs. Kaban's class in the morning (9:00-12:00), and the other half will join Mrs. Hodgson's class in the afternoon (1:00-3:00). It would be great if we had a couple of volunteers from Room 2 in those classrooms.

January Report Cards We certainly hope that report card celebrations are going on this weekend.  Students have worked very hard and should be proud of the work they have done. Science We are exploring the concepts of “Hot and Cold” during our science learning time. Reading a thermometer and comparing temperatures has been part of our learning goals this past week. We will be moving into inquiry experiences where the students will learn how and when temperatures change.  Social Studies We are looking how Calgary has changed over time. We are hearing stories and learning about how missionaries and the N.W.M.P. began to build the city we now know  Mathletics We are practicing addition strategies and learning the place value of numbers. February 12, 2020 Heritage Park Field Trip: Our field trip to Heritage Park yesterday was absolutely amazing!  We had the opportunity to explore the homes of the Prince and Thorpe families, who greatly influenced the development of Calgary. We saw hidden staircases, interesting artifacts that we guessed the uses of, and played with toys children had in the past.  We began our time in the one room schoolhouse by riding our ponies to the stable in the school yard. In the schoolhouse we tried cursive writing, learned about Roman numerals and learned about how teachers in the past checked students for sickness before school started.  We’ve often talked about how we would love to travel back in time, and our day at Heritage Park allowed us to do just that. Thank you so very much to all the volunteers who generously shared their day with us, making this great field trip possible. Grade 1/2 students have the opportunity to work with a visual artist beginning next week. Each class will be working with Maria for three sessions that are one hour in length.  We will be learning about abstract art and acrylic painting.
