Happy Friday 13!

What a tremendously exciting week we have had at Alexander Ferguson School.  Students were so very excited to share their music learning with you at our Winter Concert.  Wearing our best clothes and performing for a live audience honoured our hard work. 

Sharing a special meal together at lunch today put us all in the holiday spirit.  Students marveled at how festive the gym looked, and having the little hat ornament to put on their tree at home was so special.  This lunch was also a time for our class to enjoy each other's company.  We had a lot of fun sharing holiday toasts with each other.

Last week, one of the students from our class brought in a gift to share with another student.  It was a toy he no longer played with at home, and thought he would pass along to someone new in honour of their friendship.  This act of kindness sparked the spirit of generosity in the students.  Since that day, two other students have brought small gifts for someone else as well.  Watching students open these gifts brought us all joy.


Room 10 and Room 2 would love to have another crafty buddy time.  One of our buddy friends shared a sock snowman she made at home with her little sister.  This inspired us to create our own.  To create the snowman, each child needs a clean white sock, a clean coloured sock, and two cups of dry rice.  The socks DO NOT need to be new.  We would appreciate your help for this activity.  If you could send in the snowman supplies by Tuesday, December 17, we will be making the snowmen on Wednesday December 18.

January Report Cards We certainly hope that report card celebrations are going on this weekend.  Students have worked very hard and should be proud of the work they have done. Science We are exploring the concepts of “Hot and Cold” during our science learning time. Reading a thermometer and comparing temperatures has been part of our learning goals this past week. We will be moving into inquiry experiences where the students will learn how and when temperatures change.  Social Studies We are looking how Calgary has changed over time. Note Regarding Tasty Tuesday Lunch on February 11, 2020: Due to our field trip on February 11, students will be missing the Tasty Tuesday hot lunch.  I’m sending my utmost apologies as I realized too late for a bagged lunch to be provided for those students.  Would you please send a lunch with your child for the field trip, and we will reheat the Tasty Tuesday lunch and serve it to students on Wednesday, February 12.  Thank you so much for your understanding. Valentine Exchange: We will be exchanging valentines with each other on Wednesday, February 12.  A class list was sent home with each student today. It would be really nice if students personally addressed each card (This would also be great copying practice for students who struggle with this skill). February 12, 2020 Heritage Park Field Trip: Our field trip to Heritage Park yesterday was absolutely amazing!  We had the opportunity to explore the homes of the Prince and Thorpe families, who greatly influenced the development of Calgary. We saw hidden staircases, interesting artifacts that we guessed the uses of, and played with toys children had in the past.  We began our time in the one room schoolhouse by riding our ponies to the stable in the school yard. In the schoolhouse we tried cursive writing, learned about Roman numerals and learned about how teachers in the past checked students for sickness before school started.  We’ve often talked about how we would love to travel back in time, and our day at Heritage Park allowed us to do just that. Thank you so very much to all the volunteers who generously shared their day with us, making this great field trip possible.
